Get Access Social And Political Issues In The s Essay Sample In the late 20th century, Australias indigenous peoples were 29 times more likely to be put in jail than other Australians; 20 times more likely to be picked up by the police; less likely to receive bail or have legal representation in the court; and more likely to plead guilty.
At the same time, indigenous peoples were less likely to be called up for jury duty than other Australians. The Aboriginal Legal Service provided access to legal advice and assistance for people who could not have otherwise afforded it, but it could do little to overcome injustices indigenous Australians suffered under the Australian legal system.
Government concern for the higher proportion of Aboriginal people in prison began in the s. By the s, there were increasing question from within government and from community groups about whether this meant that Aboriginal people were more likely to commit crime or just more likely to be charged with an offence.
In the s, there was growing concern of the tragically hight number of Aboriginal people who were dying while in police custody. In the Commonwealth Government ordered a royal commission to investigate these matters and the general issue of the treatment of the Indigenous Australians within the Australian legal system.
The report indicated that the same percentage of Aboriginal people died in police custody as did non-Aboriginal people. It found that the reason for the high proportions of indigenous peoples in jail was that they were more likely to be imprisoned for relatively minor offences.
Its recommendations described the problems indigenous Australians encountered while in prison and the factors that had contributed to their imprisonment. The inquiry revealed that the police and the legal system generally failed to cater for the cultural differences of Aboriginal Australians.
Some may appear uncooperative because of the poor understanding of the English language or, in the case of females, embarrassment. Others, out of fear of authority figures, may be unwilling to insist on their rights they are entitled to.
Aboriginal culture places a lot more emphasis on the group than the individual. Many experience terrible feeling of isolation when separated from their own people in unfamiliar surroundings, a situation which may lead to acute depression and suicide.
The report also recommended improvements to Aboriginal health services, housing and educational opportunities.
From May to Januarythere were another 55 Aboriginal deaths in custody throughout Australia. The main reason for these deaths continued to be the fact that indigenous Australians were more likely to be taken into police custody than other Australians.
Other ongoing problems were the failure of prison staff to provide adequate medical care for these prisoners and the inability of police to identify the particular cultural factors which may have placed these prisoners at greater risk. The role and significance of the Tent embassy InThe Aboriginal Advancement League asked the United Nations to support its claims for land rights and compensation.
Protestors pressured State and Federal Governments to respond to the injustices of indigenous peoples having been disposed of their land. He said that his government would grant neither land rights not compensation to Australias indigenous peoples.
They could lease land but only for what his government considered worth while economic or social purposes. McMahon also said also said that his government would allow mining on Aboriginal reserves. That afternoon four Aboriginal activists Michael Anderson, Tony Coorey, Billy Craigie and Gary Williams came up with a daring scheme to express anger at the prime ministers attitude.
They set up an Aboriginal embassy in a tent on the lawns of Parliament House in Canberra. Australias indigenous peoples united in their support for the Aboriginal Tent Embassy and the land rights issue it sought to publicise.
The government ordered the police to dismantle the embassy but protestors put it back up again. It remained outside Parliament House for six months and was for many indigenous peoples a great source of pride and inspired them to become involved in politics.
The Aboriginal Tent Embassy focused national and international attention on the Australian governments polices towards its indigenous peoples. The embassy symbolised the importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of establishing recognition of their traditions, culture and rights within the Australian community and by its government.
One of the most recognisable symbols of the Aboriginal people also appeared around this time the Aboriginal flag, which was created by the Aboriginal artist Harold Thomas.
It first appeared in public in at an Aboriginal Day street march in Adelaide.Free Political papers, essays, and research papers. My Account.
